2,6-Dimethylpyridine is a colorless oily liquid with a pungent odor. Its melting point is -6 degree , boiling point is between 143 degree and 145 degree , relative density is about 0.92g/mL, and refractive index is about 1.497. It is easily soluble in water, miscible with organic solvents such as dimethylformamide and tetrahydrofuran, slightly soluble in hot water, ethanol, soluble in ether, acetone, etc. In addition, it is alkaline and can form salts with inorganic acids and organic acids, and can also form addition compounds with inorganic salts and halogenated alkanes.

2,6-DMP is widely used, mainly in the following fields:

Pesticide intermediates: as a key synthetic raw material for herbicides and insecticides, for example, for the preparation of high-efficiency and low-toxic pyridine pesticides.
Pharmaceutical industry: intermediates for the synthesis of anti-tumor drugs, antibiotics and vitamin B6, especially in the production of quinolone drugs.

Pyridine methylation method: pyridine is used as the raw material and undergoes an alkylation reaction with methanol under the action of a catalyst (such as ZSM-5 molecular sieve). This method is mature, but there are many by-products and it needs to be purified by distillation.

Synthetic ammonia method: pyridine derivatives are generated through the condensation reaction of acetaldehyde and ammonia, and then the target product is obtained by separation. It is suitable for large-scale continuous production, but has high requirements for equipment.
